Best way to scrape snow and ice off your car

Who loves chiseling ice off your car in the morning?? Not me!! If you park on the curb instead of under a shelter, our cars are susceptible to crazy temperature swings in which the snow will slightly melt then freeze into a thick layer of ice.

Chiseling ice off your car is a tedious task that requires a good ice scraper and lots of patience. Here are a few tips for making this task a little easier.

Invest in a good ice scraper. If your ice scraper is more than a couple of years old, you are probably due for a replacement. Ice scrapers work best at lifting ice when the blade fits tightly against the windshield. A warped scraper means you’ll be going the same spot over and over again which can get rather tiresome. Ice scrapers are cheap and can be founds in the automotive department of any discount store.

Warm your car.  While contemporary cars no longer require a “warm up” period to get the engines going, using the car’s heater to loosen up the windshield ice is a super easy way to save time. All you need to do is to turn on your car’s engine and set the heater to low defrost. In under 5 minutes, the ice will have softened enough that it can be scraped away from the windows lickety-split.

Spray with a homemade deicing agent. The best deicing agent found is something you can make right at home. Pour 1 cup of tepid water, 1 cup of rubbing alcohol, and 1 cup of vinegar into a spray bottle, shake, and then spray on your windshield and windows. Let set for 5 minutes, then scrape off any remaining ice.

Cover up. The best way to avoid icy windows is to cover them up at night. A cheap blanket will do the trick. I arrange a blanket over the car so that it covers the front windshield and all 4 passenger windows. To prevent the blanket from disappearing during the night, merely tuck the blanket behind the car doors before locking
